Other than skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common cancer among American women. Mammograms are the best way to detect breast cancer early, when it is easier to treat and before it has progressed enough to cause symptoms.

What are the symptoms?

There are different symptoms of breast cancer, and some people have no symptoms at all. Symptoms
may include:

  • Any change in the size or the shape of the breast.
  • Pain in any area of the breast.
  • Nipple discharge other than breast milk (including blood).
  • A new lump in the breast or underarm.

If you have any signs that worry you, see your doctor right away.

How can I lower my risk?

You can’t change some factors, such as getting older or your family history, but you may lower your risk of breast cancer by taking care of your health in the following ways:

  • Keep a healthy weight.
  • Exercise regularly.
  • Don’t drink alcohol, or limit alcoholic drinks to no more than one per day.
  • Breastfeed your children, if possible.

Staying healthy throughout your life will lower your risk of developing cancer, and improve your chances of surviving cancer if it occurs.

Always be sure to talk to your physician about before making any changes to your health, diet, or medications.
